about national chi nan university
in 1995, national chi nan university (ncnu) was founded in puli, nantou county, in central taiwan. today, it has a student population of over 6000, and a faculty and staff strength of 550. ncnu aims to distinguish itself through the following four  vision statements: “infuse local distinctive features”, “integrate humanities and technology”, “aggregate traditional and foreign education” and “combine ecology and environment protection”.
the name "chi nan" conveys the school's mission: to spread chinese culture and learning from north to south, from china to the overseas world. "chi nan" was first used as the title of an academic organization more than a century ago. "chi nan academy," establised at the end of ch'ing dynasty, and "chi nan university, " established in shanghai after the founding of the republic, were both deciated to educating and teaching talented chinese youths born or raised abroad. the choice of the name "chi nan" therefore also conveys our intention of take up this mission and to devote ourselves to the education of talented youths from both within and outside of china.
in 1995, national chi nan university (ncnu) was founded in puli, nantou county, in central taiwan. today, it has a student population of over 6000, and a faculty and staff strength of 550. ncnu aims to distinguish itself through the following four  vision statements:
infuse distinctive local features”- we conduct programs that address the unique needs of the local rural population, such as student-led community services, and tutoring programs for school children from remote townships. we also offer distinctive curricula that are synergetic with local economic activities, such as leisure and tourism, photo-electronics and the local industrial development.
integrate humanities and technology”- through various interdisciplinary teaching programs,  specialized courses and academic development projects, we encourage our students to embrace technology for the betterment of society, as well as humanistic enrichment that is in pace with technological advances.
aggregate traditional and foreign education”- foreign students choose us thanks on the one hand to our traditional campus architecture and culture, and on the other hand to the efforts of the university entrance committee for overseas chinese students, which is organized annually by ncnu. as such, we have maintained the highest foreign-student ratio in the country.
combine ecology and environment protection”- ncnu campus is surrounded by a natural and ecological diversity. thus, we have always valued and attached great importance to carbon reduction, and environmental education and conservation.

under the current development trends of the global economy, southeast asia is rising economically as global factories move southward; thus, this region has become a major market for taiwan’s international trade expansion. through our continual effort in developing higher education for overseas chinese students, and our research in southeast asian education, ncnu enjoys an advantage in the southeast asian higher-education market. ncnu houses the best southeast asia research institute and southeast asia research center in taiwan; we also have the largest enrollment of students from southeast asia. ncnu will soon establish a university-wide specialized curriculum on southeast asia. while we cultivate in ncnu graduates an international perspective, we particularly inculcate in them an emphasis on southeast asia so as to enhance their competitiveness for international employment.
due to its geographic location, ncnu campus suffered dramatically from the 921 earthquake. together with nantou citizens, ncnu faced difficulties in post-disaster reconstruction and recovery.  through this recovery process, ncnu and nantou citizens gradually developed a close bond. nourished by the nature, culture and tourism resources of shuishalian – the local aboriginal territory, ncnu has developed an educational agenda characterized by awareness and compassion for the local communities.  thus, complementing our local identity with a cosmopolitan mentality, ncnu has established its unique strengths and self-positioning.
in 2013, ncnu received a grant from the ministry of education for  the “plan to encourage pursuit of academic excellence in universities”. this  plan aims to develop university teaching and research programs with a focus on enhancing the international standings and professional competitiveness of our graduates. execution of the plan follows two design paradigms:  creating a niche based on our local characteristics, and widening our international perspective. based on these, four principle programs have been created:

1. shuishalian campus:
the shuishalian campus stands for a concept that combines ncnu educations resources with the abundant natural and cultural resources of the region, so as to achieve a symbiotic relationship between the university and the local communities. its development begins in puli of central taiwan and gradually extends to the shuishalian region. based on this concept, unique courses on ecology, rural sociology and natural conservation are formulated. besides extramural lectures and practical trainings aimed at community participation, ncnu students also step out of the classroom into the local communities and industries. this is possible via curricula that are designed for learning through practice and service, and to cultivate community awareness.

2. great swan initiative:
shuishalian has a strong track record in its innovation of traditional industries, development of leisure and tourism industries, creative and cultural innovations, as well as incubation of aboriginal enterprises. alliance between ncnu and the local industries has also been on the rise. based on such an advantageous setting, ncnu has proposed the great swan initiative for the local industries aimed at enhancing our students’ understanding of traditional and local industries, thus to enhance their professional competitiveness. under this initiative, students can benefit from lectures by industry leaders, mentorship under industrial professionals, and take part in undergraduate research collaborations with industry partners.

3. overseas chinese education program
this program is aimed at making ncnu the university of choice for overseas chinese students. it is founded on the unique advantages that ncnu possesses, in the form of dedicated chinese language courses, academic counseling for overseas chinese students, internships programs in native countries, southeast asian cultural links, etc.

4. southeast asian focus
ncnu distinctively focuses on southeast asia with university-wide southeast asia general education courses that enable students to expand their global perspectives. through interdisciplinary courses the program aims to produce professional elites with a southeast asian advantage. thus, we hope to strengthen our cross-border ties and to enhance the competitiveness of ncnu graduates in the growing southeast asian region.

brief desc ription and development of college of humanities, college of education, college of management, college of science and technology and general education center:
1. college of humanities:
the college of humanities offers academic programs in humanities and social sciences.  due to increasing overseas demands for chinese teachers as well as to enhance our overseas-chinese education programs, the college has established the institute of chinese as a second language. to meet the needs of foreign students, the college of humanities also offers chinese education curricula to compensate for a serious shortage in chinese teachers overseas. in the future, in line with university-level academic development plans and to consolidate departmental resources, the college will establish a college-level degree program with a broad-domain curriculum. in 2013, the “master’s degree program in operation management of non-profit organizations” will be established for practicing professionals. this program may assist local npo (non-profit organization) development and strengthen operation management capabilities, and cultivate quality npo management personnel through a diverse and cross-disciplinary program. in addition, a “research center of innovation and practice of shuishalian” is in the planning; this center will serve as the platform for the co-development of humanities and social sciences on the shuishalian campus.

2. college of education:
the college of education aims to cultivate excellent academic research personnel as well as educators for schools in the community. it also offers domestic and overseas educators advanced training and professional development opportunities. ncnu provides a solid foundation for our students in their future teaching and research careers through inter-department, inter-college and multi-disciplinary collaboration. this promotes quality research but also values the complementary roles of theoretical instruction and practical training. because of the demands for educational professionals, the college of education will actively internationalize. we also provide integrated training courses and advanced studies for principals and department heads of primary and secondary schools in central taiwan. in particular, ncnu college of education is planning programs for “primary and secondary education leadership training” and “educational human resource management”, aimed at cultivating educational research talents.

3. college of management:
the college of management emphasizes the “3c capabilities: competence, confidence, character”, implying “importance of theory and practice, work dedication of operational management talents”. in response to taiwan’s national master plan for “6 key emerging industries”, the college of management pools together academics of related fields to establish the “emerging market strategy and development phd programs”, specially focusing on “leisure and tourism”, “biomedical services” and “cultural and creative industries operations”. ncnu college of management is currently promoting international teaching collaboration plan of multiple tripod programs, which will strengthen international exchanges and enhance the competitiveness of the college.

4. college of science and technology:
the mission of the college of science and technology is to train and produce technologists who are forward-looking and humanistic, in line with the global technology development trends as well as the country’s industrial and economic policies. to consolidate puli’s position as the anchor of tertiary education in central taiwan, the college of science and technology has been actively facilitating ieet accreditation and moe review of its departments.  in view of current transformations in the society and advances in scientific and technological research and development, the demand for technological manpower is trending toward cross-specialization and multi-disciplinary qualifications. hence, to ensure the career prospects of our graduates, the college of science and technology has been transforming itself with a view for niche skills and professional advancement for our students. in 2011, the college saw the establishment of the graduate institute of applied materials and optoelectronic engineering;  the merger of the department of electrical engineering and the graduate institute of communication engineering; the merger of the graduate institute of biomedicine and biomedical technology with the department of applied chemistry; and the decommissioning of the graduate institute of earthquake and disaster mitigation engineering. meanwhile, planning is on-going for the department of communication engineering, doctoral programs of applied materials and optoelectronic, the graduate institute of electronics engineering and the biomedical technology doctoral program of the department of applied chemistry.

5. general education center:

students’ humanistic knowledge and technological literacy reflects ncnu’s goal of strengthening professionalism and integration of general education.  besides featuring structural general courses and core academic courses, it also utilizes general courses and teaching to augment cross-schools exchanges. “public service” is a course for students to apply their passions and learning to the disadvantaged. public service allows students to learn from their experiences, realize their passion and cultivate the notion of care, service and  compassion for others, and develop open-minded characters. physical education courses offer “feature sports”, which include boats, archery, equestrianism, golf, ballroom dancing, tennis, swimming, etc.  currently, there are also eco-concept” classes for students to develop “eco-ethics” and the correct environmental concepts. in order to embrace green energy, carbon reduction, ecological conservation, environment-friendly and sustainable development issues, ncnu general education center provides green-energy industry development curricula.  meanwhile, the southeast asian multicultural special curriculum has been established through overseas students admissions and southeast asian studies; it aims to strengthen competitiveness of graduates in the southeast asian employment markets.

 career development
ncnu has recently established several academic courses to incorporate society and industry development trends and assist students’ career development upon graduation. classes initiated since 2008 include: entrepreneurial management program, tourism management program, digital contents industry program, local culture history and regional sociological program, rfid based applications technical program, fpd flat panel display program, financial services employment program, international cultural and education program, science and technology management program, corporate counseling master program, bao cheng enterprise program, corporate resource planning (rfid & erp) employment program, honor credit programs, tourism and hospitality employment program, international chinese language teaching program, english interdisciplinary program, as well as international programs. these programs are designed to meet social development trends and enhance students' employability. to advance and distinguish  unique characters of ncnu, ncnu is designing “eco-friendly”, “southeast asia culture”, “local industries”, “emerging industries” and  “eco-urban and rural areas” feature programs to cultivate multi-disciplinary skills, develop students’ global perspective and enhance employ competitiveness. since ncnu especially values class participation and for students to “see the world from puli”, students are required to complete basic care service trainings and community services or overseas voluntary works upon graduation, thus to cultivate local care and recognition to meet taiwan’s needs for elite talents.
